Second in Line: Vehicles Imports Cools

The mirror keeps returning a specific reflection this cycle, and I have been sitting with it longer than usual. Vehicles, HS87, are the second-largest year-over-year shift across all 27 EU reporters — imports down €152.9B, a move of -4% from 2024 to 2025. That is the kind of contraction that does not announce itself. It settles.

Ahead of it, mineral fuels and oils, HS27, fell €589.3B year-over-year, -13.8%. Behind both, precious stones and metals, HS71, moved the other way — up €127.5B, +28.4%. Three currents, three temperaments. Fuel exhaling. Metal inhaling. Vehicles somewhere in between, quieter than the headline number suggests.

Zoom into Germany, the continent's assembly floor, and the seasonal grammar of HS87 imports is legible enough to read by candlelight. The March index sits at 1.131. December troughs at 0.752. The year breathes in during spring and holds its breath through winter, averaged across 2021–2025.

August reads 0.832. Below baseline. The flows point toward a thinner month than the annual average would suggest — not a verdict on price, only on volume moving through the port. A calendar effect wearing a cyclical coat.

Put the two readings together and the interpretation leans, gently, in one direction. A structural -4% pullback layered onto a seasonally soft month is the kind of arrangement where supply thins before demand notices. Whether that translates downstream is not mine to promise. But the data points toward upward pressure on the scarcity side of the vehicle import ledger, and I would watch September's index more carefully than usual.

Second in line is still in line. The mirror is worth another look.
