Second in Line: Vehicles Imports Cools
The room is quiet tonight. A trader at the far end nurses his second Compute Juice and asks me what the mirror is showing. I tell him the story is not where he thinks it is.
Everyone watches energy. Everyone should. Mineral fuels and oils under HS27 fell €589.3B year-over-year, -13.8% across the 27 reporters between 2024 and 2025. That is the loudest print on the board, and it deserves the ink it gets.
But the second line matters more than most people notice. Vehicles under HS87 slipped €152.9B year-over-year, -4% across the same window. Smaller in percentage, yes. Structural in shape. When the continent buys fewer cars from the outside, it is telling you something about credit, about substitution, about the mood of the buyer.
Zoom into Germany and the seasonality sharpens the frame. HS87 imports into DE peak in March at index 1.131 and trough in December at index 0.752, averaged across 2021 through 2025. The wheel turns the same way most years — spring pulls, winter releases.
August reads 0.832. Below the annual baseline, above the December floor, closer to the trough than the peak. The seasonal pattern points toward below-baseline vehicle inflows into DE this month, layered on top of a year already running softer. This is a reading of the flows, not a price call. Interpret accordingly.
Precious stones and metals under HS71 moved the other way — up €127.5B, +28.4%. I leave you with that contrast. Metal in, machines out. The mirror is honest about what the continent wants when it is uncertain.
